Free Fall" film screening

Business context

Explaining the exercise to students:

In recent years, China has seen the advent of "social credit", a system designed to rate good and bad citizens. The latter are granted or denied certain rights or access to services or transport according to this rating.

Video France 24 " With "social credit", China classifies "good" and "bad" citizens "

The video was used as a starting point for an initial exchange on the subject, and we then watched "Chute libre", a 1:00 episode of the Black Mirror series:

The story takes place in a world where each person rates the others from 0 to 5, with the best rated having access to better services. Lacie lives only to improve her 4.2 rating, and is looking to move out of the apartment she shares with her brother, who despises the rating system, to the nicer neighborhoods.

This was followed by a discussion of the issues surrounding social networks and the way they modify and influence our relationship with the world, our image, and that of others.

Instructions :

After watching the film, do you think social networks have an influence on your image and that of the people you interact with? Does the rating system used in the film and in China today strike you as something that could be considered on a large scale today? What do you think about it?

Objectives :

Get students to think about their relationship with social networks and digital technology
After viewing, they discussed what they had thought of it and the questions :

  • Are social networks changing our perception of reality?
  • How do social networks influence my image and that of others?

Back to business

The film got the students thinking about the possible excesses of social networks and, above all, about the way they see the world through them. Part of the class was in favor of this rating system and defended social networks, while another part criticized the way they work and the possible abuses.

The debate took place in a calm and attentive atmosphere, and the students were able to exchange their points of view.

It's a good starting point for the second theme of this ERASMUS project: Connecting with others.
